We are alarmed by the disproportionate rate of Indigenous, Black, and Brown Women, girls and Two Spirit persons who account for 40% of the population who are reported missing. Indigenous women experience the highest rate risk with more than 4 out of 5 women (84.3 %) who experience physical violence. The statistics for those who will experience physical violence in their lifetime current statistics account for 1 in 3 women (35.6%) and include 1 and 4 men (28.5%). In addition to these statistics, nearly half of all women, men and Two Spirit persons will experience emotional or psychological abuse.
We advocate to protect BIPOC futures and encourage more education, awareness, self-defense training, prevention workshops to be offered in early education and for all ages within our community to help promote healthy relationships, learn warning signs, and ultimately prevent violence, human trafficking and loss of life.
We demand community leaders, media and law enforcement give the same attention to missing BIPOC persons and report accurate data to help address gaps of care, protection and find solutions to end these systemic issues that plague our most vulnerable community members. For example, there is currently no data on Latinx/Latine missing persons who are being classified as "White." Congress must also act to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) and Frederick Douglass Trafficking Victims Prevention and Protection Reauthorization Act of 2021, pass the Protect Black Women and Girls Act, and fund the full implementation of the Ashanti Alert Act.
We are sorry for your loss and hope that we can connect you with some resources to offer comfort during these challenging times.
We know that the last thing a person or family is prepared for is news that their loved one has departed, and as you experience tremendous grief, it only adds additional stress when someone doesn't have resources to help with funeral expenses. We understand that it is equally important for someone to have resources to afford to respect their cultural protocols during this time as well. We know that some may need to make arrangements for their loved one to be returned to their Ancestral homeland, which may be outside California or perhaps even outside of the U.S.
To apply for assistance with your funeral costs, legal advice and coordination of having a loved one return to their Ancestral homeland for their final destination.
